You often hear of how salmon would be impacted by the Pebble Mine but what about the caribou?
There have been several studies done that show the toxic dust from mining operations such as Red Dog Mine have had an adverse affect on lichen growth for miles around. These activities include blasting and ore handling as well as dust being spilled out from container trucks.
Lichen is one of the main foods for caribou and is highly nutritious. However, it is also slow growing and very sensitive to any environmental changes.
The Independent Environmental Monitoring Agency is an excellent example of how a group has been monitoring mining activity in their area. In their case, they have been monitoring the Ekati Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories regarding fugitive dust and the effects on caribou.
