I came across a rather disturbing article on ehow.com titled “How to Make Lead Fishing Sinkers.”  Please be aware that lead fishing sinkers are one of the main causes of bird mortality.

Have you ever wondered what happens to those snags and broken lines from fishing?

Lead takes many, many years to break down and as it ages it looks no different from a stone that an unsuspecting bird might digest.  Once the bird has digested the lead, it leaches constant poison into the bird and it dies a prolonged and painful death.

Birds such as loons and eagles have seen their populations drop significantly due to  eating fish that contain these sinkers.

Please help get the lead out!  Use non-toxic tackle instead.  Minnesota has an excellent site on lead fishing sinkers.
